Elbow was founded in 1909 and incorporated as a village on April 6 of that year. It sits in the Rural Municipality of Loreburn No. 254, near what is now Lake Diefenbaker. The village took its name from its position on the elbow of the South Saskatchewan River.
Today Elbow is known for its lakeside setting. Next to the village is the Elbow Harbour Recreation Site, centred on Lake Diefenbaker's Elbow Harbour. It has a 110-slip marina, an 18-hole golf course, a beach, and an RV campground with 60 fully serviced sites, along with fuel, laundry facilities, a restaurant and a grocery store.
Within the village itself, a sod house now serves as a museum, and Elbow also has a library.
